Though misleadingly referred to as “income inequality” in the new media, this critically important topic actively entered public debate in 2011 with Occupy Wall Street. Nobel Prize-winning economists Joseph Stiglitz and Paul Krugman and others added to the debate in the years that followed. Then, Senator Bernie Sanders flogged the issue at every opportunity in his presidential race in 2016, giving the issue further prominence. If there’s anyone alive and alert in America today who isn’t aware that the concentration of wealth is a growing problem for our society, I’d be surprised.Few contemporary American observers have a clearer-headed understanding of the issue and its causes than Noam Chomsky. Chomsky, born in 1928, is widely regarded as the father of modern linguistics and one of the founders of the field of cognitive science. He’s also well known—some might say notorious—as an activist and social commentator. He has written dozens of books on the technical aspects of his academic work, and even more on politics. But his latest, Requiem for the American Dream: The 10 Principles of Concentration of Wealth & Power, is not a book he wrote.Instead, the book was distilled from a 2015 film of the same name, a documentary patched together using interviews filmed over four years with Chomsky. Unlike the books he has written, most of which are slow going and many (the texts on linguistics, impenetrable), Requiem consists entirely of transcriptions from the spoken word. The style is conversational and uses only a bare minimum of jargon. It’s a quick read, and an enlightening one.As Chomsky notes, “Power has become so concentrated that not only are the banks ‘too big to fail,’ but as one economist put it, they are also ‘too big to jail.'” Given our experience over the past decade, it would be difficult to argue with that. And anyone who closely follows events in American society today would say the same about this observation by Chomsky: “the rich and powerful, they don’t want a capitalist system. They want to be able to run to the ‘nanny state’ as soon as they’re in trouble, and get bailed out by the taxpayer.” If the American people fully understood how much tax money is funneled to corporations as subsidies, and how much the tax code has been distorted to favor them and their shareholders, they would storm Washington DC by the millions.In Requiem, Chomsky presents ten “principles” that together explain how the massive concentration of wealth in America today has come about. (His analysis applies to other wealthy countries as well, but it fits the U.S. best.) His argument is best summed up as what he calls a vicious circle: “Concentration of wealth yields concentration of power, particularly so as the cost of elections skyrockets, which forces the political parties even more deeply into the pockets of major corporations.”The 10 principles underlying this reality, as Chomsky sees them, are: Reduce Democracy Shape Ideology Redesign the Economy Shift the Burden Attack Solidarity Run the Regulators Engineer Elections Keep the Rabble in Line Manufacture Consent Marginalize the PopulationI’ve never seen a more comprehensive or economical explanation of how wealth has come to be so concentrated in so few hands in the U.S. today. Most of these principles are self-evident at a glance. Only two may require explanation. Chomsky uses the word “solidarity” as a synonym for empathy, caring for others, or “concern for your fellow man,” to cite another archaic expression. His Principle #8, “Keep the Rabble in Line,” refers to the coordinated 45-year effort by Big Business and Right-Wing ideologues to destroy the labor movement.The editors of Requiem—Peter Hutchison, Kelly Nyks, and Jared P. Scott—have interspersed short passages from other sources among the 10 Principles. The sources range over the centuries: from Aristotle and James Madison to Harry Truman and Martin Luther King Jr. These short excerpts from classic documents, speeches, press reports, and social commentaries add depth to the book’s presentation and enhance understanding of Chomsky’s message.Chomsky’s views have often been regarded as extreme. Certainly, he is vilified by commentators and scholars on the Right. Nixon policies on the other hand, were far left of the modern Democrat.Today we have a majority of Democrats that consider themselves centrists but would have been Republicans in 1971 by most policies. Call them Reagan Democrats or Rockefeller Republicans, but it’s resulted in policy paralysis for the working and poor and accelerated the wealth of the masters of society and business.Noam keeps the paragraphs short, tries not to use too many 5 cent words, and assembled a lot of great observations and information in 10 short paragraphs. I have yet to watch the movie, but the book cut straight to the heart of the matter. He doesn’t pull any punches and he offers the straight scoop on wealth concentration, social imbalance and the impacts it has on our society.The positive thing I take from the book is that this is a political problem, which means there is a political solution. The majority of Americans agree on a lot of principal matters that would result in a lot more prosperous healthy lives for the most of society. When things get this far out of balance, historically the public has pressured the governments and businesses to make concessions such as in the New Deal. It's up to us to organize and sustain grass roots pressure to shape policy.We the people, can overcome the power of money but we need to act urgently and work together for grass roots change. About the Author
Dr. E. W. Kenyon (1867-1948) was born in Saratoga County, New York. At age nineteen, he preached his first sermon. He pastored several churches in New England and founded the Bethel Bible Institute at Spencer, Massachusetts, which later became the Providence Bible Institute when it was relocated to Providence, Rhode Island. Kenyon served as an evangelist for over twenty years. In 1931, he became a pioneer in Christian radio on the Pacific Coast with his show Kenyon's Church of Air, where he earned the moniker "The Faith Builder." He also began the New Covenant Baptist Church in Seattle.For more than fifty years, Don Gossett (1929) has been serving the Lord through full-time ministry. Born again at the age of twelve, Don answered his call to the ministry just five years later and began his ministry by reaching out to his unsaved family members. Don apprenticed with many well-known evangelists, beginning with William Freeman, one of America's leading healing evangelists during the late 1940s. He also spent time with Raymond T. Richey, Jack Coe, and T. L. Osborn. Don's many writings have been translated into almost twenty languages and have exceeded twenty-five million in worldwide distribution. Don also has recorded two cassette series. His daily radio show, launched in 1961, has been broadcast worldwide. Don has five children to his first wife, Joyce, who died in 1991. Don remarried in 1995 to Debra, who has joined him in his ministry in Washington State.

Herrick is the author of five books, on topics ranging from the history of rhetoric to the religious discourse of Enlightenment England. He teaches courses in argumentation, critical thinking, and the history of rhetoric. Professor Herrick sits on the editorial boards of several scholarly journals and is a founding member of the Baylor University Press series in rhetoric and religion. He is the 2007 recipient of the John and Ruth Reed Faculty Achievement Award for excellence in teaching and research.

About the Author

Dr Kate Rheaume-Bleue is a licensed Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Biology from McMaster University, with an honors thesis that involved designing a clinical trial to evaluate natural medicine. Kate completed her professional training at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (class of '02), where she also pursued two additional years of residency training. As a member of both the Academic and Clinic faculties at CCNM for three years, Kate was a guest lecturer and teaching assistant for several courses. She was the supervising clinician at two different naturopathic public health clinics in Toronto and has held private practices in Toronto and Hamilton. Since 2006 Kate has been employed as an educator and spokesperson for Natural Factors Nutritional Products, Canada's largest manufacturer of nutritional supplements. She is also bilingual, lecturing in both official languages.Kate's articles have been featured in Alive magazine, as well as Life Peak and Vista. Kate Rheaume-Bleue is an excellent writer. I wrote a comment on her interview on Youtube that I will just paste here since I would be covering the same issues anyway. Some of the reviews here have already pointed out some of the limitations of the book and the fast moving nature of the knowledge surrounding K2 which make a static book sort of a futile effort. But it is a good start, especially if you have no background with K2.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------It is the best of the current crop of books popularizing K2. The only problem with her work is that she is Canadian so has limited experience with MK-4 in her practice (due to nanny-state potency restrictions there). It is absolutely not correct that MK-4 and MK-7 have the same effect and that dosage is the only difference. Pretty much all independent researchers acknowledge that if you could only take one, MK-4 is superior in most respects.The primary people who advocate MK-7 exclusively over MK-4 are the Dutch researchers on the payroll, directly or indirectly via sponsored research, of the big MK-7 producers and then the main benefit they point out is the longer half-life (not really a benefit if you know what serum half-life means). Even the Japanese prefer MK-4 for high-dose therapeutic uses. All you have to do is go to PubMed and start reading some of the abstracts or do a web search on mk4 vs mk7 to get a broader and more informed perspective.The MK-7 manufacturer sponsored research seems always careful to not directly compare with MK-4 (no non-inferiority trials). If they did we would discover that MK-7 is not found in the brain or the saliva, MK-4 is and it is neuroprotective. MK-7 does not cross the placenta and is not at significant amounts in breast milk. MK-4 is carried by HDL (which accounts for its more rapid clearing), whereas MK-7 is carried by VLDL (which causes it to linger in the blood instead of being picked up by the tissues). MK-4 is the body's preferred form from the time of the origin of the human species. Natto with MK-7 has only been a significant part of anyone's diet for maybe a millennium. If it needs to, the human body will transform available K1 into MK-4 (granted, not very effectively) not MK-7.You wouldn't guess it by the way it is marketed, but even the fermented derived form of MK-7 is about as far from natto as you can get. One of the leading manufacturers, NattoPharma, doesn't even use the same bacteria as is used in natto (bacillus subtilis natto) and they claim there is zero soy in their product. The medium is chickpea (garbanzo bean) flour and dextrin and you can look up on Wikipedia the bacillus licheniformis they use for a culture bacteria. I suppose it does not really matter the source as long as the end product provides the stated potency.Even more interesting is the fact that their newest product is actually synthetic MK-7 which is much cheaper to produce. Nothing wrong with that. It is a purer product than their naturally derived one. They even named it MenaQ7 PURE. Both of their products strip out the naturally occurring cis-isomer form of MK-7. Nothing wrong with that, either. The isolated trans-isomer form is what is wanted anyway.The point to take away is that people get a warm fuzzy when they see the word natural associated with MK-7. Commercial naturally derived MK-7 (specifically MenaQ7) is far removed from nature and has nothing to do with natto. The company even says their synthetic version is bio-equivalent and nature-identical to their fermented version (i.e., you can't tell the difference). Soon, if not already, most all MK-7 on the market will be synthetic because it is purer and cheaper to make. [...] (I suspect Amazon will zap this link so I will also put it in the comments.)Even the lovely Kate couldn't resist the financial lure of becoming a paid spokesperson for an MK-7 marketer (the vitamin company she works for). That only slightly detracts from her excellent book and she would have had to become a smuggler to become personally familiar with MK-4 in her practice anyway. But as always, when it comes to the validity of advice, always follow the money. There are good things to be said for MK-7 (I take it myself) but it is disingenuous to suggest it is somehow superior overall on its own to MK-4. The evidence does not support that view. They both have related and differing effects. It probably does make sense to take both.The real problem is that well-heeled marketing and patent collection oriented companies that manufacture MK-7 use research funds as a means of marketing their specific products via carefully structured and relentless research programs. The end user requires much diligence to wade through it all and discern actual value. And as always, follow the money...

I read this book in early 2015 and thought I'd try vitamin K2. I've been taking it for over two years now, 5mg of the Carlson brand of the MK-4 form of K2. In the first week of taking it, it helped clean up the tartar on my teeth. I've had that effect continuously for over two years. By the way, I tried taking an appropriate amount of the MK-7 form of K2 and it gave me hives over all of my body. I quickly switched to MK-4 and have had no problems. I know the book mentions taking 45 mg of K2, but I only seem to need 5mg. I also had a dexa scan and I have a fantastic scores on my bone density, although I don't have any earlier scores to compare that to.I thought this book was fascinating at the time I read it and I still find that to be true. I take vitamins D3, K2, and vitamin A. Hopefully this will keep my bones strong my whole life. Since it works on my teeth, I'm hoping it is also working on my bones and arteries.

01/05/2018 Taking Vitamins K2, A and D3 has changed my life. The body works on a triage system: Survival is first, reproduction is second. If you only take one of the three vitamins, you automatically become deficient in the other two. Vitamin K2 is needed to direct Calcium to your bones and teeth, otherwise it also becomes plaque build-up in one's arteries. The body is constantly building up new bones and teeth and tearing down the old. Vitamin A directs the old calcium to the kidneys, and it is excreted via your urine. In the US Vitamin D3 is added to milk, orange juice, and most calcium (plus magnesium and zinc) supplements. As a result of all these vitamin D3 supplements, the body becomes deficient in K2 and A. If you take the same amount of Vitamin A and D3, you won't become toxic in either one. Apparently in the US nobody realizes that you need to take the same amount of both vitamins. If I had been taking these vitamins I would not have had two blood clots in 2014. I started losing hair on my scalp (I have a better understanding of how upsetting this can be). The doctor's told me that I had too many more serious problems. They did not realize that the hair loss was a symptom. (To be fair to the doctors, they only have one semester of nutrition, which includes information on vitamins.) I have stopped losing hair!!! These vitamins can reverse type 2 diabetics (see page 126 for the recommended dosage of Vitamin K2), prevent Alzheimer's, help prevent cancer, slow down the aging process--I can't possibly list all of the benefits. Look at pages 31-32 and 144 to see the difference in children's teeth. These vitamins, if taken throughout the pregnancy help form the fetus's face (they will be able to breath through their nose), and the child will not need braces. Braces cost at least $5,000 or more. The mother's labor will also be easier. The first two months of taking these vitamins my left leg went down 4 inches in circumference--and that was below the knee! (26 inches down to 22 inches). Instead of just being able to lift my left food 2 or 3 inches from the floor I can now lift it at least 12 inches. (That is sitting down.) My body is doing so much better; the only difference was taking the vitamins. These are so many medical problems that can be prevented or reversed. Do your body a favor, and start taking these vitamins.
